According to School bus cameras will get first test in Chicopee from Colin A. Young of WWLP, Chicopee announced it will become the first city in Massachusetts to roll out a citywide school bus stop-arm camera program aimed at catching drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. Enabled by a law signed in January 2025, the program uses AI-powered cameras from BusPatrol mounted on buses to record violations, which are then reviewed by local law enforcement.

City officials say a similar pilot in Peabody found buses were illegally passed more than three times per day on average. The system comes at no upfront cost to taxpayers, with the program funded through fines paid by violators. City leaders will officially unveil and demonstrate the technology at a press conference next Wednesday at Chicopee Comprehensive High School, and any footage that does not show a violation must be deleted within 30 days under state law.
